Cheap Things to Save Your Collection and Your Sanity!

By Barbara Crews, About.com

What's in your collectible "toolbox"? These are things I would never be without and use often. Best of all these supplies will work on almost all types of collections. Just use a little common-sense!

Febreze

If you've ever gotten an item on eBay that reeks of smoke, you'll be glad to have this. Air it out, spray a little Febreze on it (obviously test first) and the smell will soon be gone.

Goo Gone

If you don't have any of this stuff around, go buy it right now. It's wonderful for taking off sticky price stickers, old pencil marks or that non-descript junk that just won't come off the pottery.

Museum Putty/Quakehold

This is great stuff and you don't have to live in earthquake territory to need it. It stops lids from rattling, keeps figurines from falling over and pictures stay level. It's just a few bucks a package and lasts forever. Order online if you can't find it locally.

Pledge Furniture Wipes

Ceramic and pottery pieces seem to be a magnet for grease and grime in the kitchen and I don't even cook that much. The furniture polish wipes really can clean that dirt off and even leave ceramic and tin items with a bit of shine.

The two downsides to this:

  1. You'll go through quite a few wipes in a short amount of time.
  2. In my mind, they're still not as clean as washing them.

Swiffer Dusters

I love these! Must better than dusting with a cloth or feather duster. They just scoop up the dust and hold it. The little wand is lightweight and flexible, much more so than feather duster handle. The Swiffer Dusters really work great to get in between fragile pieces.

Ziploc BIG Bags

We're talking really big bags if you haven't seen these yet. You can stick loads of clothes, a Christmas Wreath, and probably dozens of beanie babies. The Ziploc bags come in BIG and REALLY BIG, but the company calls them Xtra Large (2' x 1'7") and XXtra Large (2' x 2'7").
